What do Christians believe?

St Andrew's Cherry Hinton

Christians believe that God – the Creator of the universe – has come among us in the person of Jesus Christ. Through him, God shares our human life and offers us a share in his divine life. Christians are guided in this faith by the Holy Spirit, the witness of the Scriptures and the testimony of the Church.

Jesus said, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life’ (John 14.6)

As the eternal Son of God, Jesus’ life, words and deeds teach us what God is like. He shows us the dignity of every human life and that all people are precious in the sight of God. Just as he sought out the lost, showed mercy to the poor, forgave sins, and healed people’s hearts, minds and bodies, so we believe that God continues to do these things through his Church today.

The Cross and Resurrection

Jesus was executed because his teaching challenged the beliefs of his day. Christians believe that through his death on the Cross and his resurrection from the grave, he has defeated death and evil and opened a new way to eternal life with God for anyone who puts their trust in him.

Living the Good News

The first disciples preached the truth and power of Jesus’ resurrection because it transformed their lives, their understanding of God, and their hope for the world. The Holy Spirit draws people to Jesus today through that same truth and power, inviting us into a living relationship with God, bringing the followers of Christ together in the Church, and causing God’s kingdom to grow across the world.
