What is a pilgrimage?

For thousands of years people have undertaken journeys to places of special significance and in doing so sought personal transformation, answers to important questions and a deeper connection with God. By removing themselves from their familiar surroundings and entering new, strange or difficult places, pilgrims (which in Latin means ‘foreigner’) hope to open their hearts and minds to new perspectives and possibilities. The destination may be more or less integral to the journey: for some, reaching the place of pilgrimage may be the whole point of the journey; for others, the journey itself provides a more meaningful experience. Almost all pilgrims discover that what seemed to be the end of their journey is in fact the beginning of a new set of discoveries.
